Biography
I am currently a Senior Data Analyst at the Toronto Police Service where I work with large datasets to provide actionable insights on crime, public safety, and police accountability. Previously, I was a Teaching Assistant at the University of Toronto where I assisted in delivering courses in data science and mathematics. Prior to moving to Canada, I spent 8 years in Qatar where I was an academic researcher and project manager in the interdisciplinary field of religion & economics (specifically, Islamic banking and finance) at the Hamad Bin Khalifa University, a Member of the Qatar Foundation. I was also an Adjunct Instructor of Calculus at Georgetown University Qatar. These days, I am passionate about using data for action and for impact.
Intellectual and Professional Interests
I have a multifaceted interest in data and statistics. I am interested in how large organizations implement institutional data governance programs, foster a data-driven culture, and harness actionable, strategic insights from large datasets. I am curious about arguments made on the basis of statistical analysis and how those statistical findings are communicated to and consumed by diverse audiences in the form of visualizations, dashboards, and reports. Quantitative researchers and data analysts often make broad inferences and claims based on a sample of data; I am interested in verifying the accuracy of such claims. This involves conducting replication studies, meticulously reviewing the quality of data sources and software code, carefully considering competing hypotheses, and ensuring that statistical and sampling methods have been used appropriately and transparently. I am particularly drawn to the use of applied statistics in a wide range of fields such as higher education, public policy, human rights, development economics, economic history, public safety, and public health. I am also interested in the teaching of statistics and data science, open data science tools, reproducible research, geographical information system software, and the R programming language for statistical computing and graphics.
